This study aimed to investigate the effects of flowering induction methods on sweet tamarind (Tamarindus indica L.) trees following low-canopy pruning and to provide information for enhancing the production capacity of sweet tamarind growers in Phetchabun Province, Thailand. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with six treatments and three replications, using one tree per replication, for a total of 18 trees. The treatments consisted of: (1) no foliar application as the control; (2) foliar application of monopotassium phosphate (0-52-34); (3) monopotassium phosphate combined with potassium chlorate; (4) monopotassium phosphate combined with a commercial flowering stimulant for tamarind; (5) monopotassium phosphate combined with sodium chlorate; and (6) monopotassium phosphate combined with paclobutrazol. Data were collected on the final cumulative number of flowers, final cumulative number of pods, percentage of fruit set, percentage of flower drop, number of pods per square meter, and canopy characteristics. The data were subjected to analysis of variance, and treatment means were compared using Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test at significance levels determined according to the Pr > F value of each variable.
The results showed statistically significant differences among treatments in the final cumulative number of flowers, final cumulative number of pods, percentage of fruit set, percentage of flower drop, and number of pods per square meter. Treatment 2 produced the highest final cumulative number of flowers, with an average of 708.67 flowers. This value was not significantly different from those of treatments 1, 3, and 6, but was significantly higher than those of treatments 4 and 5 at the 0.05 level. The highest numerical values for the final cumulative number of pods were obtained from treatments 6 and 3, with averages of 143.67 and 140.00 pods, respectively, whereas treatment 5 produced the lowest average of 34.00 pods. Treatment 6 produced the highest fruit set percentage of 33.67%. This value was significantly higher than those of treatments 1, 2, and 5, but was not significantly different from those of treatments 3 and 4 at the 0.01 level. Treatment 6 also had the lowest flower drop percentage of 66.33%, which was significantly lower than those of treatments 1, 2, and 5, but was not significantly different from those of treatments 3 and 4 at the 0.05 level. Regarding the number of pods per square meter, treatment 3 produced the highest average of 1.393 pods/m?. This value was not significantly different from those of treatments 1, 2, and 6, but was significantly higher than those of treatments 4 and 5 at the 0.01 level.
The findings indicate that monopotassium phosphate combined with potassium chlorate tended to promote pod production per unit of canopy area, whereas monopotassium phosphate combined with paclobutrazol tended to increase fruit set and reduce flower drop. Nevertheless, flowering and pod development in low-pruned sweet tamarind trees were also influenced by tree vigor, weather conditions, pollination, canopy characteristics, and tree-to-tree variation under field conditions. Therefore, repeated trials across several production seasons with a greater number of replications are recommended to confirm the effectiveness of these treatments before their application in commercial orchards.
