This research aimed to: 1) examine the components of learning management innovativeness among pre-service teachers; 2) develop an instructional model to enhance learning management innovativeness among pre-service teachers; and 3) investigate the effectiveness of the developed instructional model. The research was conducted in three phases. In Phase 1, the components and indicators of learning management innovativeness were identified through a review of relevant literature and research and interviews with 15 experts. The proposed model was then examined using confirmatory factor analysis with data from 517 pre-service teachers. In Phase 2, the instructional model was developed, evaluated for its appropriateness by five experts, and pilot-tested with 30 pre-service teachers. In Phase 3, the effectiveness of the instructional model was investigated using a one-group pretest - posttest design. The sample consisted of 31 second-year mathematics pre-service teachers selected through cluster random sampling. The research instruments included an interview form, a questionnaire on the components and indicators of learning management innovativeness, the instructional model and its manual, learning activity plans, a knowledge test, a skills assessment, an attitudes and attributes assessment, and a satisfaction questionnaire. Data were analyzed using content analysis, mean, standard deviation, confirmatory factor analysis, and a paired-samples t-test.
The findings revealed that:
1) learning management innovativeness among pre-service teachers comprised three dimensions, 14 components, and 40 indicators. These consisted of four components of knowledge, six components of skills, and four components of attitudes and attributes. The model showed a good fit with the empirical data (χ²/df = 1.874, CFI = .978, TLI = .973, RMSEA = .041, SRMR = .033).
2) The developed instructional model comprised five components and five learning process steps: (1) understanding the context and identifying areas for development, (2) questioning and designing learning management approaches, (3) developing and testing prototypes, (4) reflecting on results and making improvements, and (5) sharing learning and extending outcomes collaboratively. The overall appropriateness of the instructional model was rated at the highest level (M = 4.56, SD = 0.49).
3) After the intervention, the pre-service teachers’ knowledge scores on learning management innovativeness were significantly higher than their pretest scores at the .001 level, t(30) = 6.088, p < .001, and their mean posttest score was 70.10%, meeting the predetermined criterion. Their overall skills in learning management innovativeness were at a high level (M = 3.97, SD = 0.36), as were their attitudes and attributes (M = 4.01, SD = 0.32). Their overall satisfaction with the instructional model was also at a high level (M = 4.22, SD = 0.43).
