This paper aimed to construct English short stories composed of Phetchabun folk culture, determine their effectiveness by the criterion standard 70/70, compare learning achievement results between the pretest and posttest, and evaluate students’ satisfaction of the constructed instruction. The sample used in the study, by purposive sampling, was 20 students of the 3rd secondary grade in semester 2 academic 2015 at Srimongkol Municipal School, Lomsak district, Phetchabun province. The research instruments included 2 English short stories with exercises composed of Phetchabun folk culture, pre-and-post achievement tests, and a satisfaction questionnaire. The statistics used to analyze data were percentage, mean, stand derivation, an analysis of effectiveness value E1 / E2, and difference comparison by t-test.
The findings of the research showed: First, the value for effectiveness of the English short stories composed of Phetchabun folk culture, Amazing Lomkao Rice Noodles and Nasai Temple the Mural Painting, used to improve the 3rd grade secondary school students’ reading skills was 89.68/79.25 that was higher than the specified criterion standard 70/70. Second, The 20 students’ overall achievement in reading passed 100%; their passed scores of 20 items were able to digest by mean as follows: vocabularies was at 8.55 points, grammar was at 7.30 points, and the total score was at 15.85 points. Third, the comparative outcome of the students’ pre-and-post learning achievements in reading skills after instructing with the two English short stories was statistically significantly different at level .01. Last, the students’ satisfaction of instructing with the two English short stories averaged high ( X =4.33, S.D. .367)
